How To: Every Day Curls

So, my hair is an ever evolving part of me.ย  I historically have changed colors and styles all the time.ย  I have had black hair, I’ve had brown hair. I’ve had blonde hair, I’ve had red hair.ย  I threw in some purple one time and even blue at one point.ย ย It’s been long and it’s been short.ย  I’ve had bangs, I’ve had no bangs. I’ve had the angled wedge and we took clippers to the back of my neck.ย  Oh, and we can’t forget the infamous soccer mom cut before I even had (the desire to have) a child.ย

All in all, even when I’m constantly changing it, I haven’t had many looks that I dislike.ย  BUT I’m really loving my vibe right now.ย  I am rocking a blunt, textured bob that falls just above my shoulders (it was shorter when we first cut it, but it has grown out nicely).ย  And the color is FIRE.ย  It’s a very dimensional blonde, with a combination of bright blonde highlights over my dark rooty brunette base.ย  This short blonde bob is very sassy, and very fitting.ย ย

I style it a number of different ways, but my go-to has been an easy breezy every-day curl look. And I would be completely lying to you if I didn’t get asked ALL THE TIME how I curl my hair.ย  Which is bonkers to me, because I promise that I don’t know what I’m doing.ย  I have just played around until I figured out a system that works and products that help me.ย  Oh, and I do whatever my stylist tells me to- to the best of my non-hair-professional ability.ย

The best part, I think, is that with this exact process, my curls will stay in for days at a time.ย  If you’re a non-hair washer like me, this is gold.ย  Or, if you are a hair washer, perhaps this could help you. I’ll link up all the products I use below, and will also share the extras on how I extend the look past the first day. Please enjoy this hair tutorial!ย

How To: Every Day Curls

I hope you enjoyed this hair tutorial on how to curl short hair. A few things to remember:

  1. When using hot tools on your hair, make sure your hair is completely dry and find the lowest heat setting on your tool that you can use and still get results. This was very hard for me to learn, because I’ve always used my hot tools on MEGA HOT but it was causing my hair to break. Since turning everything down, my hair has been so much stronger!
  2. For this look. all curls go backwards or away from the face!
  3. Start your curl a couple inches down the 1″ section of hair, and keep approximately 1-2″ out of the barrel of the curling iron.
  4. Make sure you have coffee if you’re curling your hair in the morning ๐Ÿ˜Š
  5. Pull the iron through that flat end as you twist the iron out of your curl.
  6. Let curls cool before touching too much!

Products used:
DRYBAR – Hot Toddy Heat Protectant Mist
I note in my video that I use this on the top section of my hair vs. the entire head. This is only because the underneath part is not highlighted, so I take special care on the blonder parts of my hair. After Day 1, I will apply this to my entire head when retouching curls.

FRIZZ EASE – Secret Weapon Touch Up Creme
This is my Tried and True girls. I have been using this cream since, I think college. I have never found a finishing cream that will take it’s place and believe me I have tried. Trust me, and it’s so cheap. You’re welcome. I use this on Day 1 after styling my hair either straight or curly. It tames the little frizzies I get towards my part, especially on my curly hair. And when my hair is straight, it will help keep the frizz at bay. I have naturally wavy hair, so this is key.

AMIKA – Got Grit Dry Texture Paste
Holy Grail. I bought this on a whim because I wanted something to give me a little texture but also hold my curls in place. I hate the feeling of mousse, or anything like that. This is great. It takes a little getting used to because it was very different consistency than anything else I have used, but once you get the hang of it it works wonders. I warm it up in my hands and then scrunch and twist all through my hair.

BEDHEAD – Headrush shine spray
Just to finish things off, this will give you a nice little shine. Not necessary, but I find my hair is a lot less shiny when I have it highlighted blonde, and adding in the texturizers (and then dry shampoo if we’re on days 3+) I like to get a little more shine.

Products that will help extend your curls (and help you not to have to wash every day!)ย
BATISTE – Dry Shampoo ย
Apply liberally to hair at night.ย  No need to use an expensive brand or worry about working it in, sleeping on it will work the product into your hair and absorb oil overnight.ย

DRYBAR – Detox Dry Shampooย
I use this during the day, as needed.ย  I apply it to give my hair a little oomph if it is looking flat (dry shampoo is very volumizing!) and work it in with my fingers at the roots.ย  This is not a daily necessity, and I use a lot less of this product than I do of the PM Batiste.ย  This is likely in part because it is a big higher quality product, but also because I don’t want to give my hair that white residue.

As always, please let me know if you try this look! Or if you have any questions about how I did this. I’m off to crush this 55 degrees in February kinda Monday! #newenglandweather am I right?! Have a great week, y’all!
